Welcome! Durham Central Market is a new neighborhood cooperative grocery working to open a store located near the downtown area. Durham Central Market follows the owner/member model of local co-op groceries like Weaver Street Market in Carrboro and Chatham Marketplace in Pittsboro, but with a distinctively Durham flavor. If you're not an owner, now is a great time to become one! Building a full-service grocery store is a big project, and we need your help to get the doors open. We're looking for investors who want to keep their money local and help get a true community organization off the ground, while still getting a return on their investment. If you're already an owner and are interested in participating in this great opportunity, you can find out more or send us questions.
Our goal for the store is to offer high quality, mostly local food and other products, to reinvest profits back into the community, to practice sustainability, and to foster a respectful, professional workplace. We invite you to learn more about the ideas and the planning that has gone into the development of the Durham Central Market cooperative. As a grocery store dedicated to serving Durham and built by Durham, Durham Central Market got to this point through the great work of volunteers from local Durham neighborhoods. We continue to need volunteer help and hope that you will consider volunteering your time and talents. You can contact us by email at info@durhamcentralmarket.org or send us mail at P.O. Box 25216, Durham, NC 27702-5216.
Here is DCM's January newsletter, including an update from Project Manager Don Moffitt.
Durham Central Market will be in attendance at the Museum of Life & Science's Fall Harvest Festival on Saturday, Nov. 12th from 10-4. There are many fun activities planned throughout the day highlighting gardening, public transit, environmental conservation, livestock and wildlife, and more. We'll have activities for the kids showing where food comes from. Food, music, dancing, and a beautiful forecast. It looks to be a great event. Hope you can make it!
You know the DCM Annual Meeting is this Sunday. But what you may not know is that a big chunk of the meeting will be devoted to a guided focus group/discussion in small groups, facilitated by Meredith Emmett. The purpose of this exercise is to get feedback from owners on their preference for which criteria are most important for decisions going forward. In other words, it won't be your usual run-of-the-mill speechifying. This is *your* co-op, please come and contribute your voice. You may be sorry if you miss this opportunity. We would love you to come for potluck as well (starts at 5), but if you can't make that, please join us for the business portion, beginning at 5:45. We surely hope to see you there !
